What a Vedic kundli is — and what it is not
A plain-language explanation of a Vedic kundli: why date, place, and time matter, what the chart is for, and what it cannot prove.
Kundli means a calculated chart
In everyday Indian usage, a kundli (janam kundli, natal chart) is a diagram of planetary positions for a birth. Vedic or Jyotish practice typically uses a sidereal zodiac and traditional house systems. The important part for a website is simpler: the chart is computed from astronomy plus a chosen traditional overlay. It is not a random quote about your “lucky colour.”
Western tropical horoscopes in magazines often lead with Sun sign only. A kundli, when complete, includes the Moon, Lagna, other grahas, and nodes. Completeness still depends on inputs. A pretty diamond chart with a fake time is not more Vedic; it is more wrong.
What the calculation is for
People use kundlis for family ritual, naming conversations, matching, and personal journaling. This website uses them as a structured prompt: here is a symbolic map; here are limits; here is a free place to ask a reflective question. We do not claim the planets cause your salary or your marriage.
Sidereal versus tropical, briefly
Sidereal practice aligns signs with the starry backdrop using an ayanamsha. Tropical practice anchors signs to seasons. Both are human conventions. Mixing them in one paragraph without saying so is how internet arguments start. Our tool follows the traditional Jyotish-style calculation used in the product, and the chart page should be read with that in mind.
What a kundli cannot prove
It cannot prove a crime, a diagnosis, a bank balance, or whether someone is a “good match” as a moral fact. If a practitioner says otherwise, that is their claim, not a feature of astronomy.
