Dashas: a traditional timeline, not a forecast
What planetary dasha periods are in Jyotish, why they depend on the Moon, and how to treat them as a reflective timeline rather than a prediction of events.
What a dasha is
In Vimshottari and related systems, life is described as a sequence of planetary periods and sub-periods. The starting point is usually tied to the natal Moon’s Nakshatra. That is why a fuzzy birth time can scramble the whole timetable even if your Sun sign never changes.
A calendar of symbols, not a booking with destiny
A dasha can be read as “this period emphasises Saturn-like themes of duty and limit” or “this period emphasises Jupiter-like themes of study and expansion.” It cannot ethically be read as “you will receive money on Tuesday.” If an astrologer guarantees event dates, that is their marketing. It is not astronomy.
Why we are conservative
Because dashas inherit Moon-boundary errors, a responsible app should not shout a 20-year story from an unknown clock. Prefer tools that hide or qualify dasha output when time is unknown.
If a dasha description makes you want to quit medicine, ignore a court date, or harass an ex, close the tab. That reaction is the problem, not the planet.
Better use
Pick one theme for the current period and one earthly action: a conversation, a budget review, a study hour. That is reflection. Event-prediction theatre belongs elsewhere.
